What is Claude Chat Exporter?
Claude Chat Exporter is a Chrome extension that lets you save any Claude.ai conversation as a Text file, Markdown document, or structured JSON — directly from your browser toolbar, in one click.
It supports timestamps, YAML frontmatter, thinking blocks, tool use, and clipboard copy. All processing happens locally in your browser. No data is ever sent to a server.

What export formats are available?
Plain Text (.txt), Markdown (.md), and JSON (.json). Text is the default. You can also copy the output directly to your clipboard without saving a file.
Does it export the full conversation or just what's visible?
The full conversation. Enable the Auto-scroll option (on by default) and the extension will scroll through the entire thread to load every message before exporting — including lazily-rendered ones at the top.
Can I export Claude's thinking / reasoning?
Yes. Enable the Thinking Blocks toggle to include Claude's extended reasoning in your export. In Markdown, thinking blocks appear as collapsible sections. In Text and JSON they are clearly labelled blocks.
Does Claude Chat Exporter collect or store my conversations?
No. Everything is processed locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to any server, and nothing is stored after the export is complete.
Do I need a Claude Pro subscription?
No. The extension works with any Claude.ai account, including the free plan.
Can I use the Markdown output in Obsidian?
Yes. The Markdown export includes a YAML frontmatter block (title, date, conversation URL) that is fully compatible with Obsidian's metadata system. Just drag the exported .md file into your vault.
Does it export tool results and artifacts?
Yes. Enable the Tool Use toggle to include tool calls and their results. Artifacts — code blocks and documents Claude creates — are always included in exports regardless of this toggle.
The export says "no messages found". What should I do?
Make sure you are on an active Claude.ai conversation page (the URL should contain claude.ai/chat/). Refresh the page, wait for it to fully load, then try exporting again.
The extension icon is greyed out. Why?
The extension only activates on claude.ai conversation pages. Navigate to a conversation and the icon will become active.
Can I copy instead of downloading a file?
Yes. Click the small clipboard icon next to the Export button to copy the full conversation in your chosen format directly to your clipboard — no file is saved.
